Politisk Morgensang

Morgensang newspaper
This morning I participated to an event organised by Politiken, the independent newspaper with a centre-left stance (it could be like the Italian “La Repubblica”). As the election day is approaching (minus 16 days), they organise daily Politisk morgensang where a journalist of Politiken interviews one representative of each party every day. It all takes place in the auditorium of the Borups Højskole high school, in Frederiksholms Kanal 24, it’s free, no need to register and you get free coffee.

Johanne Schmidt Nielsen after the interview
Each politician chooses 2 songs and the audience sings them before and after the interview, accompanied by live pianoforte. Today we sang “Barndommes land” and “I østen tiger stolen op” ( >> read: they sang, I have listened and barely moved the mouth…)
I missed Søren Pind yesterday but today I have seen the interview to Johanne Schmidt Nielsen, political spokesperson of the Enhedlisten (the Red-Green alliance).
Percentage of Danish understanding: 80%

It surprised me that it was so easy to approach the politician, at the end everybody was free to go and giver a hug or have a quick chat. There were no guards, the entrance was free and there were about 100 people listening without snapchatting/instagramming/facebooking/selfieing. I was also impressed by the simple organization: a stage in a school with no fancy TV studio, 2 microphones, 2 cameras, 1 pianoforte and 2 plastic cups of coffee. It’s election time and in Italy you can forget about having such an event, free and where there were no protestors destroying or disturbing the event. Also, as a foreigner I appreciated how easy it was to get access to the political representatives. I think it was a great way of making the elections approachable to everybody.
This is also made possible because Danes are respectful people. I have seen each one of them having just 1 (one) cup coffee, and even if the “Morgensang newspaper” was free, some of them even put it back in place after the event. My eyes couldn’t believe it… Kudos to Denmark and to the civilisation of this people. They might have many other defaults and spring might take a little longer before manifesting itself, but this morning I was happy and satisfied of being part of this culture.
